The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
