Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
